TRANSPA MOBILE APP

Year 4 | Mobile App for Patients | 4 Months | 2023

Transpa is a mobile app for patients who want to better understand healthcare billing costs and make proper financial decisions.

The intention is to enable patients to compare costs between hospitals based on one's insurance through transparent healthcare billing costs.

The goal of this project is to design an accessible product to help patients feel confident when choosing a hospital or institution to go forward with.

Solution

1) Problem

  • The prompt for this project was to create a product for a specific type of disability and the disability I chose to work on is Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

2) Research

  • I began my research by figuring out what Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is.

  • I found that (CTE) is a progressive and fatal brain disease that is commonly caused by repeated traumatic brain injuries such as concussions and other repeated head injuries.

  • After surfing the internet, I learned that current products that exist to prevent (CTE) are helmets that have cushions placed on different parts of the head to dampen and lessen the impact of a heavy blow to the head.

  • Down below is an image of a bubble map my fellow teammates and I created for (CTE).

  • After getting to know more about (CTE), I began my user research by conducting an 30 minute interview with a 22 year old University Student who recently experienced brain surgery.

  • I gathered the data from the interviewee and proceeded onto the analysis stage.

The Interviewee

  • Name: Ryan

  • Age: 22

  • Condition: Brain Tumor

  • Treatment: Brain Surgery

3) Analysis

  • I scanned over the data I collected from the interviewee and selected direct quotes I found interesting to create new insights in hopes to spark an area of focus for the ideation stage.

  • After narrowing down my insights, I decided to proceed with the mobile app idea that saves time and money since my interviewee, Ryan mentioned that he feels frustrated and unsatisfied with the amount of time and money he had to spend at the hospital with the minimal care he got without having known the costs beforehand.

4) Ideation

  • I brainstormed concept ideas with some of my fellow classmates by prompting questions for further thoughts from the problem frame I created above.

  • The 3 concept ideas I designed are:

    • Concept 1: CTE Delivery Drone

    • Concept 2: Transparent Billing & Doctor Appointment Booking App

    • Concept 3: Hospital Wait Time Comparison W/ Data App

  • After prototyping with with 3 different users, some feedback I received were:

  • 1) CTE Delivery Drone

    • Thinks it is a bit small to carry anything and that I should make it bigger so that it can carry heavier things

    • Said I should consider security because patients would have to authorize the treatment before getting it or else there could be misuse of drugs

    • Mentioned that I would need the treatments to be in some kind of capsule that retained the temperature the treatment delivered should be in

  • 2) Transparent Billing & Doctor Appointment Booking App

    • Easy to use

    • Likes the idea of the transparent billing

    • Asked if I could merge transparent billing with hospital wait time app

    • Wonders if i could have a make the transparent billing in spreadsheet form to better analyze all the different treatment costs

    • Thinks I should color code the box if the number is higher

  • 3) Hospital Wait Time Comparison W/ Data App

    • Easy to use

    • Could add use of icons

    • Says I can use AI to collect and display the data

    • Thinks I should add more categories to the data page

  • I learned that my users were all pretty good at using apps and decided to test the app on someone who isn’t as technologically savvy for the next round of user testing.

  • I decided to move forward with the healthcare cost comparison mobile app using transparent billing from concept 2.

5) Solution

  • I created Transpa: a mobile app for patients who want to better understand healthcare billing costs and make proper financial decisions.

  • It enables patients to compare costs between hospitals based on one's insurance through accessible billing transparency costs.

  • The goal of this project is to design an accessible product to help patients feel confident when choosing a hospital or institution to go forward with.
